Testimonials – Hypnosis to support cancer treatment

Following a stage 1 breast cancer diagnosis, like many people, I went into research mode searching for complementary therapies and activities that might help me through surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and the future decade of drugs that it looked like I’d face. My first priority was how to get through surgery: I’d never had it before and I’m extremely squeamish, so the idea had been making it difficult to sleep and be calm. Once I came across Helen, who dedicated a page on her website to evidence that hypnotherapy could help, I knew this was my first step.

I booked two sessions with Helen, and she sent me bespoke audio recordings to listen to. I’m not sure how I would have sat waiting in that hospital room without the preparation and daily listening to the recording. I listened to the (separate) recovery recording from a few hours after the surgery and then daily. Physically I recovered really well, the surgeon was very pleased with the healing: I was mobile a few hours after surgery and could use my arm almost full motion again within a couple of weeks. I am so grateful to Helen for supercharging this process.

Helen has now guided me through many months since then, with our sessions and her recordings. She has adapted to each new fear and concern I’ve had, from surgery, to chemo, to worries about planning the future. I was anxious about chemotherapy damaging healthy cells, but we turned this around to focus on the benefits and although completed, I still refer to chemo as “the spa”.

Helen has always found the right words for each phase of treatment. They provide an anchor at the back of my mind when the information or overthinking kicks in, and have remained there, supporting me, long after our sessions. I am not sure how I would have got through the treatment so far, remaining resilient and as healthy as possible, physically and mentally, without Helen’s support. I would wholeheartedly recommend anyone else with a cancer diagnosis to work through the process with her.

I didn’t think that hypnotherapy could possibly help me. I had had a fear of needles, hospitals, dentists, even opticians (basically anything remotely medical) for my entire life and I just thought that was the way it was. At 59, and being diagnosed with early stage breast cancer, I realised that trips to the hospital with the various procedures necessary were unfortunately going to become part of my life for the next few months. To say that I was anxious was an understatement. It was suggested that I might contact Helen to help.
After 3 sessions with her (and listening to the personalised recordings that she provided me with), I’m not saying I look forward to my hospital visits but I no longer have all those awful feelings of dread and panic that I used to have. I feel calm, prepared and ready to take each visit literally one step at a time.
This sounds slightly odd, but she has literally changed my life. I just wish I had done this 40 years ago – it would have save a lot of angst.

Highly recommend Helen, she changed my life. I could not have fought my cancer without [the hypnotherapy work] we did together before my diagnosis. She is truly amazing.
